Forex Trading Simulators: Backtest, Replay, or Demo?
"Simulator" covers three genuinely different tools, and knowing which one you need saves months. All three let you trade without risking money; they answer different questions.
1. Backtesting — does the strategy work at all?
A backtest replays your strategy's rules over years of history automatically and reports the statistics: win rate, profit factor, drawdown. It answers the first and most important question — did this edge ever exist? — across thousands of trades in seconds. If a strategy fails its backtest, no amount of practice will save it. This is where every systematic trader should start, and it is free to do without code.
2. Bar-replay simulators — can you trade it by hand?
Replay tools (TradingView's bar replay, dedicated products like Forex Tester or FX Replay) step through history candle by candle while you click the trades. They test the human, not just the rules: can you actually pull the trigger, hold through the noise, and follow the plan? For discretionary traders this is invaluable deliberate practice. Its weakness is sample size — a human can replay dozens of trades in an evening, not thousands — so replay is a poor way to establish whether an edge exists, and a good way to train yourself to execute one that does.
3. Demo accounts — does it survive the real market?
A demo (paper) account trades live prices at your actual broker with fake money. It is the only simulator that includes the real world: live spreads that widen at rollover, real fills, weekend gaps, the broker's actual behavior. Its weakness is time — a forward test gathers evidence at one trade at a time. Use it as the final stage: after the backtest says the edge exists and verification says your deployed script matches the test, the demo tells you whether reality agrees.
The honest workflow uses all three
Backtest to establish the edge (thousands of trades, minutes). Verify the deployed version matches the tested one (engines disagree more than you think). Then demo-trade it and compare the live statistics against the backtest's expectation. ForexEdge is built around exactly that pipeline — backtest, TradingView parity verification, live demo tracking on your own OANDA practice account — with each stage's win rate shown side by side, so drift from simulation to reality is visible instead of surprising.
ForexEdge backtests forex strategies without code, verifies them trade-for-trade against TradingView, and tracks live results against the tested expectation.
